Shopping in StockholmStockholm has sometimes the fame of being an expensive city, which is partly true; however the prices for clothes and shoes can be extremely convenient if you are looking for quality but not necessarily any brand in particular. A part from well-known Swedish brands as H & M and IKEA, there is a wide variety of shopping that can be done in Stockholm. Normal opening hours are 10.00 - 18.00 Monday to Friday and around 10.00 to 15.00 on Saturdays. Shops are normally also open on Sundays. In order to plan your vacation we recommend you to spot all the centric shopping streets below on a map. Also, many of the main hotels and some museums are located nearby the most important shopping areas. Where to go?The main shopping street is called Drottninggatan and is just outside the metro stop T-centralen. Just nearby on the streets Sveavägen, Hamngatan and Kungsgatan there are also a lot of different stores worth visiting. It is also worth going to Biblioteksgatan and Stureplan if you are looking for more exclusive clothes, bags and shoes. In the old part of the city Gamla Stan there are two main streets, Österlånggatan and Västerlånggatan that form a circle around the picturesque island where Stockholm’s history started 800 years ago. Here you can find mainly tourist shops but also handy crafts and creative small boutiques. Make sure to try the homemade waffles, ice cream and hot chocolate in Gamla Stan! Department StoresIf the weather does not allow strolling around on the shopping streets, there are also five department stores in the middle of the city: Åhléns, Debenhams, PUB, NK, or Gallerian and they have a great variety of products. These department stores are also open longer. In the two first ones you can actually rent a personal shopper assistant if you feel like having a second opinion about what to buy and try on. Market PlacesAt Hötorget, which is located in the middle of the city center you can buy fruit, vegetable, flowers and handicrafts. If you get hungry and need a short brake during shopping, just next to the square you have a hall with different restaurants called Hötorgetshallen, where you find restaurants that serve exotic food from all over the world. In the southern part of the center on the island Södermalm there is a modern market called Söderhallarna and is worth visiting if you anyway pass by that area. Near to here there is a relatively new area of trendy shops called SOFO (South Of FOlkungagatan), If you are looking for a more exclusive food market you could go to Östermalmshallen where you can find raw ingredients and traditional Swedish food. This is located in the more exclusive part of the city, Östermalm. Quality Outlet If you are a non-EU resident, you are entitled to a tax refund every time you buy something for more than SEK 200. Make sure to ask in the shop if they are included in this tax free system before you buy, since not all shops are a part of this refund system. Another very popular product to buy in Sweden is glass. In some places you can also see how they create the crystal glasses and bowls. This can for example be seen at the open-air museum Skansen where you also can buy the handicraft that is elaborated there. |
